The editor's take
Awarded the Blue Flag for water quality every year, Playa de la Arena is a striking 100-metre crescent of jet-black volcanic sand framed by low cliffs and the silhouette of Los Gigantes to the north. The shore drops off quickly into beautifully clear water, ideal for snorkelling — you'll spot sea bream, ornate wrasse and the occasional barracuda. Lifeguards patrol the swim zone, and a small promenade connects to the village of Puerto de Santiago with its bakeries and tapas bars. A favourite of in-the-know visitors who want black sand without the trek of Bollullo.
Insider Tip
Sunset from the bar Sotavento above the beach is the local secret.

Long exposure at sunset turns the waves into silver smoke.
