Playa de las Américas

The south's energetic, all-hours resort capital.

Built from scratch in the 1960s on what was then desert volcanic coast, Playa de las Américas is Tenerife's original mass-tourism resort and remains its most extroverted. The headline product is convenience: nine kilometres of seafront promenade link the area to neighbouring Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje without ever leaving the shade of a palm tree, and you can walk to dozens of beaches, hundreds of restaurants and the south's busiest nightlife in minutes. The accommodation skew is large, four-star and price-competitive; recent renovations at properties like Hard Rock Hotel and Royal Sun Resort have lifted the ceiling. The beaches — Troya, El Camisón, Las Vistas — are wide, soft and well-equipped. Best for travellers who want a high-volume holiday with plenty of action on their doorstep and easy access to excursions; less suited to visitors looking for quiet, design or authenticity, who should look at Adeje, El Médano or the north.

Atmosphere

High-energy and unapologetic. Long sandy beaches by day, beach clubs through the afternoon, busy promenade by night — Tenerife at its most extroverted.

Best For

Groups, party-leaning couples, first-time visitors, value-led travellers who want plenty of options on their doorstep.

Where to Stay

Large 4-star resort hotels, all-inclusive packages, apartment complexes and a handful of recent 5-star renovations.

Where to Eat

International chains and steakhouses dominate the seafront; venture inland to Avenida de Los Pueblos and Playa Honda for stronger Spanish and Italian independents.

Insider Tip

Walk 10 minutes east along the seafront promenade to Playa El Camisón — the area's prettiest beach, with calmer water than the main strip.
