The single most important decision you'll make when planning a trip — and it's not as obvious as the brochures suggest.
Tenerife is shaped by Mount Teide rising 3,718m from its centre, and the great volcano divides the island climatically and culturally into two distinct halves. The south is what most package holidaymakers picture: arid, sun-drenched and wall-to-wall resorts. The north is greener, cloudier, more authentically Canarian and home to the cultural heart of the island. Here's how to choose between them.
The south wins for guaranteed sunshine. Costa Adeje, Las Américas, Los Cristianos and the wider south coast see roughly 340 sunny days a year. Rain is rare. The trade winds blow over the top of Mount Teide and dissipate before reaching the southern resorts. If you're flying down for a week of sun in February, this is the safer bet.
The south wins for resort infrastructure. Hotels here are larger, newer and more numerous; the all-inclusive offer is unparalleled in Spain; beaches are imported sand, lifeguarded and accessible. Family infrastructure (Siam Park, Aqualand, kids' clubs) is concentrated here. If your priority is a resort holiday, the south is built for it.
The north wins for character. Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava and Garachico have history, architecture and atmosphere that the south lacks. The food scene is more interesting; the people speak less English; the air smells of pine and banana plantations rather than sunscreen. The north feels like Spain; the south feels like a holiday destination.
The north wins for nature. Teide National Park, Anaga's laurel forests, the Teno mountains and the wild north coast cliffs are all in the north. The hiking is better, the scenery more varied, and you wake up to mist in the laurel forests rather than poolside reggae.
The north wins for value. Comparable hotels run 25-40% cheaper in Puerto de la Cruz than in Costa Adeje. Restaurants are noticeably cheaper too. A €15 menu del día in Garachico would cost €30 in Adeje.
Our recommendation: spend 4 nights south for guaranteed beach time and resort comfort, then move to Puerto de la Cruz for 3 nights to experience the cultural island. Drive across the island via Mount Teide on the transfer day for the most dramatic single road journey in the Canaries.
