What to expect
The Anaga peninsula in the north-east is one of the oldest geological formations on Tenerife — and one of the last remaining examples of the laurisilva, the prehistoric laurel forest that once covered most of the Mediterranean. Hikes range from easy 2-hour loops to a full-day traverse from Cruz del Carmen to the coast at Taganana. The forest is misty, mossy and feels primeval. Combine with a stop at Cruz del Carmen viewpoint and a lunch of local Anaga goat cheese, papas arrugadas and mojo at one of the family-run guachinches in the hills.
Expert Tip
Hike on a misty day for the most atmospheric forest experience — bring a light rain layer.
