What to expect
Once Tenerife's main port, Garachico was buried by a volcanic eruption in 1706 and rebuilt in the lava that destroyed it. The result is one of the most atmospheric small towns in the Canary Islands — narrow cobbled streets, baroque churches, and natural lava-rock swimming pools (El Caletón) that fill with Atlantic seawater every tide. A 2-hour guided walk covers the 16th-century Castillo de San Miguel, the Convento de San Francisco, and the artisan workshops along Calle Esteban de Ponte. Stay for lunch at El Caletón and an afternoon dip in the natural pools.
Expert Tip
Visit on a Tuesday — the local market sells the best gofio and Anaga cheese on the island.
