What to expect
The original capital of Tenerife and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, San Cristóbal de La Laguna is a colonial-era grid of pastel mansions, baroque churches and atmospheric courtyards — and home to the island's main university, which gives the city a young, creative energy. A 2-hour guided walk covers the Cathedral, the 18th-century Casa Lercaro, the Royal Sanctuary of Christ, and at least one historic patio not normally open to the public. End at one of the city's tapas bars on Calle Heraclio Sánchez for an afternoon of small plates and Tenerife wine.
