What to expect
Playa de las Américas and Playa de Troya offer some of Europe's most consistent beginner-friendly surf, with reliable year-round waves of 1–1.5 metres breaking over a sandy bottom. Schools provide wetsuits, soft-top boards and qualified instructors; in a single 2-hour lesson most beginners are standing up by the end. Group sizes are typically 6:1 student-instructor ratios. For more confident surfers, El Médano on the south-east coast offers stronger waves and better wind for advanced sessions. Multi-day camps include accommodation in surf houses behind the beach.
Expert Tip
Book your first lesson for an early-morning session when the wind is still calm.
