Each Tenerife area suits a different traveller. Here is the no-nonsense ranking.
Tenerife is large by Canary Islands standards (the size of Greater London), and the choice of where to stay shapes your entire experience. Here is our ranking of the eight main areas, each judged on its merits.
1. Costa Adeje. The most polished, with the best beaches, the best 5-star hotels, and the most reliable weather. Best for first-time visitors and luxury travellers. Downside: feels less like Spain.
2. Puerto de la Cruz. The cultural choice. Old town, food scene, microclimate. Best for second-time visitors and anyone who finds Costa Adeje sterile. Downside: cooler and cloudier.
3. La Caleta. A subset of Costa Adeje, but worth its own ranking — the best dining-village atmosphere in Tenerife, with a small black-sand cove and walkable luxury.
4. El Médano. Bohemian and authentic, with the best beaches and proximity to the airport. Best for surfers, kitesurfers and digital nomads. Downside: the wind.
5. Los Gigantes. Dramatic cliff scenery and quieter than the main resort strip. Best for couples and west-coast explorers.
6. Los Cristianos. Family-friendly, accessible, with the best ferry connections. Best for first-time families. Downside: feels older than Adeje.
7. La Laguna. The university town and only proper city option. Best for urban travellers and food lovers — but you'll need a car for beaches.
8. Garachico. The escape choice. Best for slow travellers wanting a quiet north-coast retreat. Downside: limited dining and no beach.
