El Puertito

Snorkel with sea turtles in a sleepy cove.

The editor's take

El Puertito is a tiny natural harbour reached down a rough dirt road, where a few fishermen's huts share the cove with a single restaurant. The reason to come is in the water: a resident colony of green sea turtles grazes on the sea-grass beds metres from the shore, making this the easiest free turtle encounter in the Canary Islands. Bring a mask and snorkel, swim out 30 metres, and you'll find them. Visibility regularly exceeds 15 metres. The 'beach' itself is tiny and pebbly, so come for the snorkelling, the calamari at Restaurante El Puertito, and a complete escape.

Insider Tip

Avoid Sundays when locals descend; weekday mornings are magical.
