Playa de La Tejita

A wild kilometre of golden sand under Montaña Roja.

The editor's take

La Tejita is what El Médano would look like without the town: a kilometre-long expanse of golden-and-grey sand with no buildings except a single chiringuito at one end. The northern half is family-friendly; the southern half, beneath the cone of Montaña Roja, is naturist and bohemian. The wind that blows here is strong and constant, drawing a small community of windsurfers and beach campers in vans. There are no lifeguards and the surf can be powerful, but this is the place to feel a real sense of Atlantic wildness within 10 minutes of the airport.

Insider Tip

Hike the 20-minute volcano trail behind for a 360° view to El Hierro.

Climb Montaña Roja at golden hour for a panoramic shot of the bay.
