The Botánico is what the great European spa hotels would look like if transplanted to a subtropical island. Built in 1976 and continuously refined, it sits in 25,000 sq m of botanical garden in Puerto de la Cruz — one of the few Tenerife hotels surrounded by lush vegetation rather than concrete. The Oriental Spa Garden is one of the largest spas in Spain, with Thai and Ayurvedic specialists in residence. The four restaurants — particularly the formal Il Pappagallo — are old-school in the best sense, with white-jacketed waiters and an extensive wine list. Rooms are classic and traditional rather than fashionable, which suits the Botánico's slightly older, repeat-visitor crowd. Best for travellers who want the cooler, greener north coast and a contemplative wellness break.
